Beyond The Free Market is a collaborative project initiated by Spring Exprit, currently involving Chan Baik, Mary Anne Francis, Trevor Giles, and Mike Knowlden. Beyond The Free Market looks at the consequences of capitalist economic policies for food production and consumption. It aims to explore through creative, critical practice issues such as overproduction, insufficiency and the environmental impact of industrialised food production. My concern with the non-food waste that retail and supermarkets generate – especially the copious amounts of plastic packaging that is difficult to recycle and often ends in landfill – has resulted in various initiatives. In August 2007 I held a workshop that addressed the utilitarian applications of these materials – the ‘Make-in’. Out of this evolved the ‘BTFM Green Gifts’ see image above for the ‘90% post-consumer plastic’ flowers, 2007.
